âMomma! Momma! Look!â My pudgy little hand extends, holding out the most eclectic bundle of flowers. Roots and all.
âOh, how beautiful!â She takes the flowers and sniffs them enthusiastically, insighting giggles from me. Her face is radiant and full of pure joy. Her hair is left wild and untamed by the crown she normally wears.
âYou are beautiful, Momma!â My words were no less true that day than any other. She was a gem in our kingdom and broke more than just the King's heart when she left us.
My father comes into the room, swooping us both into his arms and spinning us around in circles as we all laugh. He looks so much the same, and yet... not. His eyes are wider and filled with love, lacking the tiny lines along the corners from the months he spent in mourning. His hair is much thicker and does not contain any of the wisened gray streaks.
How have I never noticed how much he has aged? The thought makes my heart clench, so I let it go and fall back into the bliss of the memory.
This all happened about ten years ago before my mother started getting ill. Actually, this may have been one of our last few trips out to the cottage.
âYou are both beautiful! The most beautiful girls in all the kingdoms!â He plops a giant smacking kiss on my forehead that has me feeling giddy all over again before turning his attention to Momma. He locks his eyes with hers, and it is as if the whole room drifts away from them. Father sets us down and then places his hands on either side of Motherâs face, pulling her in for a deep searing kiss.
Most children would be grossed out by their parentsâ show of affection, but I never was. I have always found witnessing the love between others fascinating. After all, if they had not loved each other, I would not exist. Not that I knew the particulars of all that back then. More likely than not, I assumed it was some fae that poofed babies into existence one night after their mother and father wished for them.
My attention is drawn back to my parents as my father steps back and heads outside. My mother watches him leave with a look that I could only ever hope to have one day.
âCome here, Calliope.â My mother calls me to her as we head to a chair by the fireplace. When she has herself in position, she scoops me up and sets me on her lap before wrapping her arms around me tightly and rocking. Her sweet and spicy smellâlike ginger and honeyâflows around me, and I instantly relax. The smell of her alone brings me comfort unlike any other.
âCalli, my sweet. One day, your kingdom will call on you.â Her melodic voice moves through me, but my ears perk up. The memory of this had always been so hazy before. But now? Now I can remember her words clearly as if she had just spoken them to me yesterday.
